Updates

Last night we had a partnership meeting and heard all kinds of updates -- here's a brief recap.

Children's Ministry continues to walk bega kwa bega [shoulder to shoulder] with us, raising funds and awareness.  This summer the kids are learning about malaria in their vacation bible school sessions, and they are collecting coins to purchase mosquito netting that will be distributed to children and pregnant moms through the Tungamalenga Dispensary.

Kuzunguka zunguka will be the theme of a summer camp experience for first through fifth graders August 20-23, with kids delving more deeply into Tanzanian culture and learning about the hardships and blessings of Tanzanian life.

Mahove Water Project is almost complete! We've authorized the final payment and expect to dedicate the project during our August visit.  We will follow up with some sanitation training and conversation about maintenance and sustainability.  Thanks to St Paul Partners for their unwavering support.

Scholarship thank you letters to donors will be sent this month now that we have received updated student lists.

We contributed $4000 to a pilot project at Image Secondary School with the goal of providing solar power for a computer lab that will support science education.  During the first ten years of our partnership, our education support was aimed exclusively at providing scholarships for individual students.  We are now expanding our support to projects that improve the schools and teaching for the whole student population.

The nursing school at Ilula Hospital will open either this fall or in January.  Classroom buildings have been constructed and dormitory accommodations are in progress.  This will be a new opportunity for scholarship support.

Iringa Hope is an affiliate partner of Bega Kwa Bega developing micro finance in the Iringa area.  Tungamalenga is one of the success stories, having started its co-op with a gift from Shepherd of the Valley, and continuing with a loan repayment rate of over 90%.  We have opportunities to provide funding for co-ops in other parishes, and to provide funding for twice yearly training sessions for co-op leaders.

$577 was raised by the Shepherd's Sale for bikes for Tungamalenga evangelists.  That's about six bikes we'll buy!
We're starting to plan for guests in the fall of 2013.  The cost of bringing three guests to Minnesota will be around $10,500.  A fundraising proposal is being sent to the finance committee for consideration.  Bringing guests to SOTV is one of the ways we can enlarge the partnership here, by fostering interaction with congregation members who would not be able to travel but still want to meet and support our partners.  It's also a sign of the mutuality of our partnership, and an opportunity to reciprocate the gracious hospitality we have so often received in Tanzania.

As always, there's lots going on in our partnership with the people of Tungamalenga Parish.  There's always room for more ideas, more hands, more participation.  Karibu sana, you are warmly welcomed.
