5 days, memories for a lifetime

Today we're back in Iringa after five days in the village and on safari at the  national park.  Here's a short round up of the memories we've made...

Most of the group spent Wednesday afternoon through Friday morning at Ruaha National Park, enjoying the comforts of River Lodge and the amazing sights of the game park. Photos coming soon....

Kirsten spent those days in Tungamalenga and Makifu.  A meeting with the health care committee, hearing plans for the dispensary expansion to a health center within the next couple years, and hearing the dream that someday it will be a mid size hospital for this growing area.

Barnabas Kahwage, clinical officer at the clinic, gave us some of the best news ever:  as a direct result of SOTV's Mbu Project which provides mosquito nets to children under age ten, in order to prevent malaria, this year the clinic has seen the fewest cases of malaria in children in anyone's memory.  Barnabas says that together, we can "kick malaria out of Tungamalenga!"

Thursday Kirsten and a group from the parish walked the 6.8 kilometer water pipeline from the start at Kitalongolo through Mahuninga to Mahove, accompanied by the fundi (worker) who maintains the water line.  We were very pleased to see that the line is for the most part well maintained.

(Highlight for Kirsten:  she got to ride the piki piki!)

Friday afternoon the whole group  visited Idodi Secondary School and met with students sponsored by SOTV.  The students are very grateful for the congregation's support.

Saturday, the group visited Mahove, walking the last three kilometers from the Mahuninga bridge up to the village.  A few leaks in the pipeline that had been seen two days before were already fixed.  We had a great visit with the villagers, and Scott (a traveler with some experience with water pipelines) was able to give some valuable advice on a couple trouble spots in the system.

In the afternoon we visited Mpalapande to see the progress on a new primary school.  Amazing!

Sunday the group split -- some to worship at Makifu and others to worship at Tungamalenga.  We are many parts, we are all one body in Christ -- that was something we experienced many times on this journey.

Finally, we had a spirited visit to Makambalala.  Singing, dancing, singing, dancing, and it was very hard to leave.

Tomorrow we head to Dar for the flight home.  Please pray that the radiator on the bus doesn't overheat or leak, and that the long ride passes smoothly.  We'll be in MSP around 3:30 on Wednesday afternoon.
