Monday, July 1 – Four from Shepherd of the Valley depart from Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport

Tuesday, July 2 – Arrive in Amsterdam in the early morning; depart for Dar es Salaam (with a brief stop at Kilimanjaro); arrive late evening and overnight at Wista’s Inn

Wednesday, July 3 – Travel by coaster bus across country, through Mikumi National Park, to the highlands area of Iringa; settle in to The Lutheran Center for a couple days

Thursday, July 4 – Get acclimated in Iringa, meeting leaders from the Bega Kwa Bega - SPAS and Bega Kwa Bega – DIRA offices; orientation to the Iringa Diocese; tour Radio Furaha; lunch and walking tour of the Iringa market area; meet Dr. Barnabas to purchase medicines for the clinic; late afternoon visit to Huruma Center, an orphanage owned and operated by the Iringa Diocese

Friday, July 5 – Visit Mtera Secondary School, owned and operated by the Diocese, where several of our sponsored students attend and where Pastor John Mhekwa is the Second Headmaster; the drive north on a paved road offers a spectacular view of the countryside; then drive to Usolanga

Saturday, July 6 – Usolanga Parish weekend visit; tour preaching points and learn about the parish projects and priorities; overnight accommodations are a parish guest house near the pastor’s home

Sunday, July 7 – Worship with our partners at Usolanga; enjoy a traditional meal; participate in a partnership meeting to set priorities for the coming year; drive back to Iringa for an overnight at The Lutheran Center

Monday, July 8 – Drive to Tungamalenga and check in at the Camp; tour preaching points; while at the Camp, the group will eat breakfast and dinner at the Camp, while the noon meal will be hosted at the parish youth center

Tuesday, July 9 – Tungamalenga Parish visit continues with touring preaching points, or village congregations; Mpalapande Primary School; Tungamalenga Lutheran Dispensary; see progress on the water projects

Wednesday, July 10 – Tungamalenga Parish visit continues; participate in partnership meeting

Thursday, July 11 – Go on safari at Ruaha National Park, staying at Mwagusi Camp; enjoy game drives and amazing sights, with dinner served in the dry riverbed

Friday, July 12 – Safari continues

Saturday, July 13 – Return to Tungamalenga Camp; visit Makifu Parish including several preaching points or village congregations

Sunday, July 14 – Worship with Makifu Parish; continue preaching point visits, monitor progress on the Ikwavila water project

Monday, July 15 – Continue Makifu Parish visit; participate in partnership meeting; purchase and collect harvest gifts of food for Huruma Center

Tuesday, July 16 – Drive to Iringa; visit Huruma Center and deliver gifts; enjoy a final day in Iringa

Wednesday, July 17 – Fly to Dar es Salaam; spend the afternoon exploring Slipway, a shopping center on the Indian Ocean; take the late evening flight from Dar to Amsterdam


This year there's a second group traveling! Kuimba Bega Kwa Bega or Singing Shoulder to Shoulder is a synod wide, twenty member choir with singers from six metro area congregations. Led by Deacon Mark Ertl, the choir includes a number of Shepherd of the Valley members, and will be singing with a Tanzanian Choir as we explore the Iringa Diocese and our Bega Kwa Bega Companionship.

Saturday, July 20 - AM Rehearsal; PM Meet children of Huruma Centre

Sunday, July 21 - Worship at Kihesa; 3 PM Concert

Monday,  July 22 - Explore Isimila Stone Age Site; 3 PM Concert at Ihemi

Tuesday, July 23 - Tour Image Secondary School; 3 PM Concert

Wednesday, July 24 - Visit Mpalapande & Tungamalenga; 3 PM Concert

Thursday, July 25 - On safari at Mwagusi Camp, Ruaha National Park

Friday, July 26 - On safari at Mwagusi Camp, Ruaha National Park

Saturday, July 27 - Drive to Iringa

Sunday, July 28 - Worship at Cathedral; free afternoon

Monday, July 29 - Return to Dar; flight departs 11 PM

Tuesday, July 30 - Transfer AMS; arrive MSP

Kirsten extends her stay in Iringa until August 2, arriving at MSP August 3
